The Desert Escape - A Morning of Walking at Al Wathba
Updated: Jan 5
Now is the best time to walk the Arabian Desert
This year marks 75 years since Sir Wilfred Thesiger explored Arabia's legendary Empty Quarter. His trek with Bedu companions across the western sands from the Hadhramaut to Abu Dhabi was acclaimed in his obituary by the Guardian newspaper as the last and greatest expedition of Arabian travel.
How best to celebrate? A walk through the dunes is, hands down, the most beautiful way to witness Mother Nature’s geological showoff up close. A short car journey from the hustle and bustle of Abu Dhabi, opt for Escape Event's Desert Wellness Walk and prepare to be cast in your very own Lawrence of Arabia showreel. Once you reach Al Wathba Cycle Track it’s time to meet your expert guide who will remind you to stock up on water and enjoy the modern facilities there before you take a short drive into the dunes for an experience enjoyed for centuries. Setting off into the endless dunes on foot is breathtaking, not least because the very best views are up high. The dunes roll in every direction but explore the dips where you’ll find camel farms, fossil dunes and a surprising array of plants and wildlife. After stopping at some traditional carpets laid out for a gentle stretch and restorative cup of coffee with dates you can bask in this natural wonder for a while longer before returning to the man made marvel of Abu Dhabi.
Every Tuesday for a 3 hours desert experience at Al Wathba, 45 minutes from Abu Dhabi. You can also book your own private group with a minimum of 5 guests at a time agreed. 120Dhs per person.
